General documentation tips. Cover depends on your policy wording: sudden damage is treated differently from upgrades and wear and tear.

Document

Photos of scorch marks, damaged equipment or storm debris if it is safe.
Note which rooms lost power, when it started and any burning smells or tripped breakers.
Keep receipts for temporary repairs and anything you replace.

Notify your insurer as your policy requires. An electrician can describe technical findings; they do not replace your claim or give legal advice.
